The History of the Château
The Moulis-en-Médoc Appellation
Moulis is the smallest of the six communal appellations of Médoc, with an area of 570 hectares for 42 producers. The appellation is located to the “west of Margaux and Saint Julien, to the” inland.
There are 2 main varieties of terroirs:
– deep Garonne gravel soils on the Grand Poujeaux plateau
– clay-limestone soils to the west of the appellation
Its maximum altitude is 40 meters above sea level, which allows our vines to benefit from the sea wind.
The Terroir Grand Poujeaux
Located to the East, benefiting from the influence of the Garonne and considered the best terroir in Moulis.
Soils: deep Garonne gravel, providing a poor, warm, and very well-drained soil. Perfect for great Cabernet Sauvignons.
The terroirs, called Terrasses de type 3, are identical to certain areas of Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe.
History: Why Dutruch?
Founded in the 1850s by the Dutruch family, Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux made its first appearance in the 2nd edition of the Féret guide (1868), owner: Mr. Dutruch.
Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux has been recognized as:
– Cru Bourgeois Supérieur (1932)
– Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel (1966 and 1978)
Cordonnier Family
– 1967: Uncle François Cordonnier buys the vineyard and decides to expand it by purchasing plots in the village of Grand Poujeaux. The property grows from 11 to 28 hectares.
– 1969: Uncle François completes the building work using the architect’s plans and decides to take possession of the premises.
– 1993: Uncle François cedes his property to his 4 nephews who continue to invest in the family property by building a new cellar.
– 2016: François Cordonnier (eldest of the nephews) buys the property from his sister and brothers. His primary goal was to improve cultivation techniques to further enhance the vineyard’s quality. Thanks to this soil work, the Château team manages to achieve a stricter selection of wines during blending and launch the first single-plot cuvée: Cuvée Collection 2016.
– 2022: a new range is launched, the PUR collection (100% single varietal) which highlights the specific characteristics of the property’s grape varieties: Pur Merlot and Pur Cabernet Franc.
